About the role
This interview covers the technical leadership required to run a theatre safely and reliably across rehearsals, performances and visiting productions. The panel is looking for practical knowledge, firm safety judgement, organised crew leadership and sensible decisions about maintenance, suppliers and budgets.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example of translating a creative design into a safe technical delivery plan.
- Review how you assess risks for rigging, temporary power, work at height and moving scenery.
- Think through your response to a critical equipment failure during a live performance.
- Prepare an example of leading permanent staff, freelancers and visiting technicians through a difficult changeover.
- Practise explaining how you prioritise maintenance and capital requests when funds are limited.
Common mistakes
- Treating a deadline or artistic request as a reason to weaken safety controls.
- Giving technical detail without explaining decisions, communication or contingency planning.
- Blaming performers, crew or suppliers instead of showing operational ownership.
- Discussing maintenance only after equipment has failed.
