About the role
A theatre technician supports the lighting, sound, stage and backstage systems that make a live performance run safely. The panel wants a methodical approach to checks, accurate cue work, calm fault finding and clear communication with the stage team.
How to prepare
- Review the safe order for inspecting, connecting, testing and powering basic theatre equipment.
- Prepare an example of finding and fixing a technical problem during a project or performance.
- Practise explaining signal flow and simple lighting or sound checks in plain language.
- Learn how cue sheets, headsets and fault logs support a live production.
- Think through when to stop work and escalate a hazard rather than attempt a repair.
Common mistakes
- Claiming experience with equipment you cannot explain safely.
- Attempting a live repair without communicating with the stage manager or isolating the hazard.
- Focusing on equipment while overlooking cues, performers and the rest of the crew.
