About the role
A microwave transmission interview checks whether you can turn a path profile and link budget into a stable backhaul link. The panel wants careful reasoning about clearance and fade margin, disciplined commissioning at both ends, and a safe method for diagnosing poor receive level or weather-related degradation.
How to prepare
- Revise free-space loss, antenna gain, receive level and fade margin in a microwave link budget.
- Review line of sight, Fresnel-zone clearance and the effect of terrain or new obstructions.
- Practise describing dish alignment and the checks made before accepting a new link.
- Study how rain, interference, loose connectors and poor grounding can affect link performance.
- Review safe coordination between ground staff and climbers working at both link ends.
Common mistakes
- Assuming visible line of sight proves that Fresnel clearance is adequate.
- Treating dish alignment as the only cause of a low receive level.
- Ignoring weather margin, interference and connector losses in the design.
- Discussing tower activity without stating the required safety controls.
