About the role

This interview tests how you exercise command when information is incomplete, time is short and commercial pressure is present. The panel is looking for disciplined use of procedures, strong situational awareness, open crew communication and decisions that keep safety margins intact.

How to prepare

  1. Review examples of diversions, rejected approaches and technical events where your command judgement changed the outcome.
  2. Practise explaining a complex operational decision in a clear sequence from threat recognition to review.
  3. Refresh your operator procedures, aircraft limitations and current official licensing requirements relevant to the vacancy.
  4. Prepare an example of receiving a challenge from another crew member and acting on useful information.
  5. Consider how you balance passenger communication with cockpit workload during disruption.

Common mistakes

  • Presenting confidence as never changing your mind when new evidence appears.
  • Reciting procedures without explaining the threats, options and decision points.
  • Treating a crew challenge as disloyalty rather than a safety resource.
  • Allowing schedule pressure to erode a stated safety margin.
