About the role
An assignment editor decides what the newsroom pursues, deploys reporting teams and keeps coverage accurate as events move. The panel is assessing your news judgement, command of editorial standards, ability to lead reporters and control a busy multi-platform desk.
How to prepare
- Review recent news cycles and practise explaining which stories you would lead with and why.
- Prepare examples of strengthening a weak story, stopping publication and correcting an error.
- Think through how you allocate reporters when several important stories break together.
- Prepare a coaching example that shows how a reporter improved under your guidance.
- Revise your approach to anonymous sources, right of reply, headlines and live corrections.
Common mistakes
- Choosing stories only by expected traffic without discussing public value.
- Treating copy editing as a substitute for checking the reporting.
- Giving vague accounts of team leadership with no difficult decision or result.
- Blaming reporters for errors without explaining the desk controls you own.
