About the role
This interview tests whether you can run a news desk, improve reporting and make defensible publication decisions under pressure. The panel will look for sharp news judgement, disciplined verification, calm leadership and a clear approach to corrections and sensitive stories.
How to prepare
- Review recent news coverage and practise explaining which stories you would lead with and why.
- Choose examples where your editing materially improved accuracy, structure or fairness.
- Prepare a clear workflow for handling breaking news when facts and staff are limited.
- Revisit your approach to anonymous sources, right of reply, corrections and conflicts of interest.
- Think of a time you coached a reporter through weak copy or a difficult assignment.
Common mistakes
- Treating speed as a reason to relax verification.
- Describing edits without explaining the editorial problem they solved.
- Avoiding responsibility for headlines, corrections or team decisions.
- Giving instructions to reporters without showing how you listen, coach and follow up.
