About the role
An auto electrician diagnoses and repairs vehicle wiring, starting, charging and electronic system faults. The interview tests whether you understand circuits, use meters and diagnostic tools safely, and avoid replacing parts without evidence. The panel will also look for tidy installation work and thorough checks before a vehicle is handed back.
How to prepare
- Revise voltage, current, resistance and voltage-drop testing in vehicle circuits.
- Prepare examples of finding a short circuit, a poor connection and an intermittent charging fault.
- Practise tracing a fault from a wiring diagram instead of relying only on wire colours.
- Review safe battery disconnection and precautions for sensitive electronic modules.
- Think through how you route, join, fuse and protect wiring for an added accessory.
Common mistakes
- Replacing a battery or alternator before checking cables, grounds and control signals.
- Using a test method that could damage a sensitive control module.
- Making untidy wiring joints without correct protection or strain relief.
- Declaring the job complete without testing the full circuit under normal operating conditions.
