About the role
An automotive diagnostic technician finds the cause of faults that are not solved by routine servicing or visual inspection. The panel wants a repeatable testing method, confident use of scan and electrical tools, and evidence-based decisions before parts are replaced. You should also show how you verify repairs and communicate conclusions clearly.
How to prepare
- Review a systematic path from confirming a symptom to testing a repair.
- Prepare examples involving intermittent faults, electrical measurements and misleading fault codes.
- Revise how sensor data, wiring diagrams and service information support a diagnosis.
- Practise explaining why a fault code identifies a circuit or condition rather than automatically proving a failed part.
- Think through the safety steps needed before testing powered circuits or moving components.
Common mistakes
- Replacing the component named in a fault code without testing the circuit and operating conditions.
- Skipping symptom confirmation because another person has already described the fault.
- Clearing codes without saving useful data or verifying the repair.
- Giving a technical conclusion that is not supported by recorded measurements.
