About the programme
An automotive diagnostics apprenticeship interview tests whether you can think methodically about vehicle faults and learn safely in a working garage. The panel looks for basic mechanical and electrical awareness, honest communication, respect for tools and vehicles, and a willingness to master routine work before taking on complex diagnosis.
How to prepare
- Review the basic purposes of the battery, starter, alternator, engine sensors and fuses.
- Practise describing a fault as symptoms, checks, evidence and a confirmed cause.
- Learn safe ways to support a vehicle and isolate electrical power before work.
- Prepare examples of repairs or troubleshooting you have observed or attempted.
- Think about how you would record tests so another technician can follow your reasoning.
Common mistakes
- Treating a fault code as proof that a particular part must be replaced.
- Guessing at repairs without gathering symptoms or testing the system.
- Ignoring workshop safety because a task appears quick.
- Hiding uncertainty or accidental damage from a supervisor or customer.
