About this interview
A backend developer technical screen checks whether you can reason through the services behind an application before a longer coding or system design round. The interviewer looks for sound fundamentals, practical API and database choices, a disciplined debugging approach and clear discussion of trade-offs.
How to prepare
- Review HTTP behaviour, API conventions, SQL queries, transactions, indexes and common concurrency problems.
- Practise tracing a request through application code, storage and external services.
- Revisit a service you built and identify one design choice, failure and improvement you can explain.
- Work through debugging scenarios by stating what evidence you would inspect at each step.
- Prepare to compare unit, integration and end-to-end tests for a small backend feature.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to tools or patterns before clarifying the requirements and constraints.
- Treating retries, concurrent requests and partial failures as rare edge cases.
- Listing possible causes of a fault without explaining how you would narrow them down.
- Claiming one design is always best instead of discussing its costs and limits.
