About the role
A camera operator captures technically sound, useful pictures that serve the story and fit the production plan. The panel will assess your command of core camera settings, preparation habits, visual judgement and communication with directors, sound teams and contributors.
How to prepare
- Review manual exposure, focus, white balance, frame rates and common recording formats.
- Practise explaining why you chose particular framing and movement for a scene.
- Plan how you would manage batteries, recording media and backups where power is unreliable.
- Prepare examples of taking direction and adjusting a shot after useful feedback.
- Review safe cable, tripod and handheld working around crews and the public.
Common mistakes
- Listing camera models without explaining exposure, focus or storytelling choices.
- Planning only attractive shots and forgetting coverage the editor needs.
- Starting a location shoot without checking batteries, media and recording settings.
