About the role
This interview covers responsibility for the vessel's machinery, engineering team and technical readiness. The panel wants evidence that you can diagnose faults, plan maintenance and control hazardous work under operational pressure. They will also test how clearly you report risk and justify technical spending to shore management.
How to prepare
- Revise fault-finding approaches for propulsion, generation, fuel, cooling and auxiliary systems.
- Prepare examples of a major breakdown, an overdue maintenance backlog and a difficult repair decision.
- Review permit controls, isolation, enclosed-space risks and pollution prevention in engineering work.
- Think through how you assess critical spares and explain their cost to a non-technical manager.
- Check the official flag-state or licensing authority for current certificate and endorsement rules relevant to the role.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to a component replacement before describing checks and evidence.
- Treating the maintenance schedule as more important than equipment criticality and current condition.
- Ignoring communication with the master during defects that affect navigation or manoeuvring.
- Claiming that budget pressure justifies carrying an uncontrolled technical risk.
