About the role
A Chief Risk Officer interview tests whether you can give independent, enterprise-wide advice at board level while remaining close to how risk develops in the business. The panel is looking for joined-up judgement across credit, market, liquidity and operational risk, clear regulatory command and the leadership to make escalation safe and effective.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example where you identified risk across more than one business or risk category and changed an executive decision.
- Review how risk appetite, stress testing, capital, liquidity and recovery actions connect.
- Practise presenting a serious risk to a board in plain language with uncertainty and recommended action made clear.
- Study current official CBN prudential guidance and the Basel principles relevant to the role.
- Think through how you would test whether risk culture is visible in incentives, decisions and escalation rather than only in policies.
Common mistakes
- Discussing each risk type separately without showing how exposures interact.
- Presenting risk appetite as a policy document rather than a decision and escalation tool.
- Giving the board large volumes of data without a clear judgement or requested action.
- Blaming weak risk culture on frontline staff while ignoring leadership incentives and behaviour.
