About the role
A Clerk of Works inspects construction on behalf of the client and provides an independent record of quality and progress. The panel wants strong practical knowledge, careful observation, precise records and the confidence to raise defects before work is concealed.
How to prepare
- Prepare examples of defects you identified before the affected work was concealed.
- Review the drawings, specifications and approved samples you use during an inspection.
- Think through the inspection stages for concrete, waterproofing and finishing work relevant to your experience.
- Prepare an example where you resisted pressure to accept work without adequate evidence.
- Be ready to explain how you record, track and verify defect close-out.
Common mistakes
- Inspecting only finished surfaces and missing work that will be concealed.
- Writing vague defects that do not identify the location, requirement or required action.
- Allowing programme pressure to replace evidence-based acceptance.
