About the role
A construction manager converts the project programme and design into safe, coordinated work on site. The interview tests whether you can plan buildable sequences, control subcontractor interfaces, maintain quality and safety, and recover progress using facts rather than pressure alone.
How to prepare
- Map out one complex construction sequence and explain its access, design and temporary works dependencies.
- Prepare an example of coordinating trades whose work areas or information needs conflicted.
- Review how you track progress, labour, productivity, inspections and short-term constraints.
- Choose a quality or safety intervention where you stopped work and managed the programme consequence.
- Be ready to explain the meetings and site routines you use to hold supervisors accountable.
Common mistakes
- Offering overtime as the only response to delay without testing access, design or supply constraints.
- Treating safety and quality checks as obstacles to production.
- Giving broad instructions without naming owners, dates or verification points.
- Reporting activity as progress when completed work is not inspected or usable by the next trade.
