About the role
A cybersecurity intern supports monitoring, investigation, vulnerability work and security awareness under supervision. The interview checks your grasp of basic threats and controls, but it also tests restraint and ethics. Strong answers use evidence, respect the authorised scope and explain when to escalate rather than improvise on a live system.
How to prepare
- Revise phishing, credential theft, malware, insecure configuration and common network attacks.
- Practise reading a simple alert and identifying the user, asset, time, source and surrounding activity.
- Review the stages of incident response and why evidence must be handled carefully.
- Prepare to explain risk using likelihood, exposure, impact and available controls.
- Think through how you would report a mistake or unexpected discovery promptly and honestly.
Common mistakes
- Treating every alert as a confirmed attack before checking context.
- Taking containment action on a live system without authority.
- Ranking vulnerabilities by a scanner label alone.
- Sharing attack details or credentials that should remain confidential.
