About the role
A deck cadet learns bridge watchkeeping, seamanship, cargo operations and vessel routines under supervision. The panel is looking for sound safety habits, basic nautical knowledge, willingness to learn and the discipline to work as part of a shipboard team.
How to prepare
- Revise lookout duties, common navigation lights, bridge watch routines and when a cadet should call an officer.
- Review safe mooring practice, including snap-back zones, personal protective equipment and clear communication.
- Learn the purpose of muster lists, alarms and the main emergency duties assigned on board.
- Prepare an example of following a difficult instruction carefully and asking for help at the right time.
- Check the official maritime authority or training body for current certification and sea-time rules that apply to you.
Common mistakes
- Pretending to know a task instead of asking for supervision.
- Treating lookout duty as passive observation rather than active reporting.
- Describing deck work without identifying its main hazards and controls.
