About the role
This interview covers the design, code and operating model behind a shared product design system. The panel wants to see how you make components coherent and accessible, partner with engineers and encourage adoption across autonomous teams. A lead should be able to balance consistency with real product needs rather than policing the system from a distance.
How to prepare
- Select a design system case study and explain the product problem, contribution model and adoption approach.
- Review tokens, component anatomy, states, responsive behaviour and accessibility requirements.
- Prepare an example of resolving differences between a Figma library and production code.
- Think through how you would prioritise system work against requests from several product teams.
- Practise describing evidence that a design system improved quality or delivery.
Common mistakes
- Showing polished components without explaining governance, adoption or maintenance.
- Treating accessibility as a final review instead of part of the component contract.
- Forcing uniformity where products have genuinely different user needs.
