About the role
A content designer, also called a UX writer, writes the words inside a product: button labels, instructions, error messages, empty states and notifications. You work with designers and researchers to make the product clear, consistent and kind in tone. The panel is deciding whether your words help people complete tasks and whether you can back your choices with evidence.
How to prepare
- Pick a confusing screen in an app you use, rewrite its text and be ready to explain each change.
- Prepare a before and after example from your own work and the result it led to, such as fewer support tickets.
- Think about writing for users with different levels of English and reading confidence.
- Revise how you build and maintain a tone of voice guide or content style guide.
- Be ready to explain how you handle stakeholders who want long, legal or marketing-heavy copy.
Common mistakes
- Showing clever copy that sounds nice but does not help the user finish a task.
- Treating writing as the last step instead of working with design from the start.
- Not explaining the reasoning behind your word choices.
