About the role
This interview tests the clinical and technical judgement needed to deliver safe haemodialysis. The panel wants careful pre-treatment checks, skilled access care, early recognition of complications, accurate records and education that patients can use between sessions.
How to prepare
- Review pre-dialysis assessment, prescription checks and safe calculation of treatment goals.
- Practise a structured response to hypotension, cramps, bleeding and common machine alarms.
- Refresh assessment and aseptic care of fistulas, grafts and dialysis catheters.
- Prepare an example of detecting a problem before or during treatment and escalating it.
- Think through how you explain fluid, medicine and access care without blaming the patient.
Common mistakes
- Starting treatment without reconciling the prescription, weight and observations.
- Responding to an alarm by resetting it without finding the cause.
- Using vascular access before assessing patency and signs of infection.
- Giving education as a warning instead of checking the patient's understanding and barriers.
