About the role
This interview assesses nursing care for infants and children, whose deterioration and medication risks differ from those of adults. The panel wants sound age-specific assessment, careful calculations, family-centred communication and safe escalation of clinical or safeguarding concerns.
How to prepare
- Review normal observation ranges and warning signs across common paediatric age groups.
- Practise weight-based dose calculations and independent medication checks.
- Prepare a case where a change in behaviour or observations led you to escalate care.
- Think through ways to explain procedures to children at different developmental stages.
- Review your local pathway for documenting and escalating safeguarding concerns.
Common mistakes
- Applying adult assessment or dosing principles to a child.
- Relying on one observation instead of behaviour and clinical trends.
- Speaking only to the caregiver and excluding the child from explanations.
- Investigating a safeguarding concern yourself instead of recording and escalating it.
