About the role
A field sales representative for a consumer goods company visits shops, supermarkets and open markets on a set route to sell stock, check shelves and gather market information. You take orders, arrange displays, track competitor activity and report daily on sales and stock. The panel wants someone organised, persuasive with retailers and comfortable working on the road all day.
How to prepare
- Learn the company's main brands and price points and how they compare with competitors.
- Think about how you would plan a daily route to reach the most outlets despite Lagos traffic or long distances.
- Prepare a story about convincing a reluctant shop owner or trader to stock something.
- Revise basic merchandising ideas such as shelf position, eye level and keeping stock rotated.
- Practise explaining how you would report sales, stock levels and competitor moves each day.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the relationship with retailers and treating each visit as a one-off sale.
- Underestimating the reporting side of the job.
- Not knowing the company's products or prices.
