About the role
A forensic accounting intern helps trace transactions, reconcile records and organise calculations used in financial investigations. The interviewer wants sound accounting basics, careful spreadsheet work and the judgement to describe what the records do and do not prove.
How to prepare
- Refresh double-entry accounting, bank reconciliations and the links between source documents and ledger balances.
- Practise using spreadsheet filters, conditional logic, lookups and pivot tables to review transaction data.
- Work through a loss calculation that includes recoveries, reversals and duplicate entries.
- Prepare an example of a numerical error you found and the checks you added afterwards.
- Review how to anonymise financial records before using them as a work sample.
Common mistakes
- Listing suspicious transactions without reconciling them to the underlying records.
- Giving a loss figure without showing assumptions, recoveries and excluded items.
- Using complicated formulas that you cannot explain or independently check.
- Sharing confidential names or transaction details in a work sample.
