About the role
This interview examines how you reason from incomplete ground information to safe, practical recommendations. The panel will look for a coherent ground model, careful parameter selection, awareness of construction risk and honest communication about uncertainty and limitations.
How to prepare
- Review a ground investigation you planned or interpreted and explain why each investigation method was used.
- Prepare a foundation or excavation design example, including parameter selection and sensitivity checks.
- Think through how groundwater and seasonal conditions can change construction behaviour.
- Choose an unexpected ground condition and explain how you revised the recommendation.
- Practise turning technical uncertainty into clear actions for designers and site teams.
Common mistakes
- Treating a few test results as representative without considering geology and variability.
- Checking bearing capacity while overlooking settlement, groundwater or nearby structures.
- Presenting uncertain parameters as exact values with no sensitivity assessment.
- Writing recommendations that cannot be inspected, tested or verified during construction.
