About the role
A grants assistant keeps the administrative detail behind funded programmes in good order. The interviewer is looking for accurate records, clear writing, basic budget confidence and the persistence to gather inputs from programme and finance colleagues before deadlines.
How to prepare
- Review the main stages from funding opportunity and proposal through award, reporting and close-out.
- Practise building a tracker with deadlines, owners, status and supporting documents.
- Prepare an example of finding an error before a document was submitted.
- Think about how you would follow up when a required input has not arrived.
- Review basic budget terms and how spending is compared with an approved line.
Common mistakes
- Focusing only on proposal writing and ignoring records, budgets and reporting obligations.
- Changing a figure to make two reports agree without checking the source.
- Allowing a reporting deadline to pass before raising a missing input.
