About the role
A grants manager oversees the full grant cycle, from spotting funding and writing proposals to managing budgets, meeting donor rules and closing out grants. The panel is deciding whether you can win funding, protect the organisation from compliance problems and keep donors trusting it over many years.
How to prepare
- Prepare examples of proposals you led, the donors involved and what happened.
- Be ready to explain how you build a proposal budget and keep it realistic.
- Review the main compliance rules of the donors the organisation works with.
- Think about how you handle a partner that is late with financial reports or spends outside the budget.
- Prepare a clear account of a difficult donor conversation and how you kept the relationship.
Common mistakes
- Claiming funding wins as yours alone when a team wrote the proposal.
- Talking about writing and ignoring the compliance and close-out side of the job.
- Not knowing the organisation's current donors and focus areas.
