About the role
The Head of Sixth Form combines academic leadership, pastoral responsibility and guidance for students' next steps. The panel will expect balanced judgement, confident use of evidence, credible safeguarding practice and a clear approach to leading tutors and subject staff.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example of how you identified and addressed underperformance across more than one subject.
- Review how attendance, assessment, wellbeing and destination evidence can be considered together.
- Think through a safeguarding response when an older student asks for secrecy.
- Plan a progression programme that supports university, training and employment routes fairly.
- Prepare to explain how you would develop an effective sixth-form tutor team.
Common mistakes
- Treating predicted grades as firm evidence without checking current work.
- Focusing only on university applications and overlooking other credible routes.
- Assuming older students need less safeguarding or pastoral oversight.
