About the role
A head of strategy sets the quality and direction of strategic planning across an advertising agency. The role connects client growth questions, consumer evidence and creative ambition while developing the planners who do the work. The panel will look for original but disciplined thinking, influence with senior clients and a practical approach to improving the agency's strategic product.
How to prepare
- Select two strategy cases that show the path from business problem to insight, proposition, creative work and effect.
- Prepare a view on what makes an advertising strategy useful rather than merely interesting.
- Review how you choose between qualitative research, quantitative evidence, existing data and direct observation.
- Think through how you would audit and raise planning quality across several accounts.
- Prepare an example of changing a senior client's mind without overstating the evidence.
Common mistakes
- Using fashionable language where a clear problem and choice are needed.
- Treating one research finding as proof without testing alternative explanations.
- Talking about creativity without connecting it to an audience response or business goal.
- Focusing on your own thinking while overlooking how you raise the standard of other planners.
