About the role
This graduate trainee interview explores how you identify and control hazards across power, water and utility sites. The panel wants practical safety judgement, accurate reporting and the confidence to stop and clarify unsafe work. Strong answers apply basic HSE principles to real tasks while recognising when a trainee must escalate.
How to prepare
- Review the hierarchy of controls and practise applying it to electrical, mechanical, chemical and working-at-height hazards.
- Revise the purpose of risk assessments, toolbox talks, permits to work and energy isolation.
- Prepare an example of noticing a hazard or correcting an unsafe condition during study, training or work.
- Think through the first actions after an incident, including making the area safe, getting help and preserving accurate facts.
- Review basic controls for spills, waste, noise and storage of fuel or treatment chemicals.
Common mistakes
- Listing protective equipment as the only control without considering elimination, isolation or engineering controls.
- Assuming an incident does not need reporting because nobody appears injured.
- Ignoring environmental hazards because the interview seems focused on personal safety.
- Staying silent around unsafe work because a more experienced person is involved.
