About this interview
An internal medicine residency interview tests how you approach undifferentiated adult illness, urgent deterioration and chronic disease with several interacting problems. The panel wants clear clinical reasoning, safe priorities and honest communication when evidence is incomplete.
How to prepare
- Revise structured assessment and initial management of common acute medical presentations.
- Practise forming a prioritised differential diagnosis and explaining which findings would change it.
- Review how comorbidities, medicine interactions and patient preferences alter long-term plans.
- Prepare examples of escalation, multidisciplinary work and learning from a clinical case.
- Check the official training body and programme information for current eligibility and document requirements.
Common mistakes
- Listing an exhaustive differential without ranking the most dangerous possibilities.
- Focusing on diagnosis while overlooking immediate stabilisation and escalation.
- Ignoring the patient's goals when discussing long-term treatment.
