About this interview
A medical residency interview helps a hospital or training programme choose doctors for specialist training. The panel looks at why you want the specialty, how you reason through clinical problems, your grasp of ethics, how you work in a team and how you communicate with patients and colleagues.
How to prepare
- Be ready to explain why this specialty, with real cases or rotations that shaped your choice.
- Practise talking through a clinical scenario step by step, from assessment to plan.
- Revise core ethical principles such as consent, confidentiality and fair use of scarce resources.
- Prepare examples of teamwork with nurses and other staff, including a disagreement you handled well.
- Think about how you explain bad news or complex plans to patients and their families.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the specialty for prestige rather than real interest.
- Rushing to a diagnosis without explaining your reasoning.
- Speaking about colleagues or other professions dismissively.
