About the role

An irrigation agronomist links crop needs with the performance of pumps, pipes, emitters, soils and drainage. The panel wants evidence that you can make sound scheduling decisions, diagnose uneven water delivery and protect yield when water or power is constrained. Strong answers connect measurements to field observations and give operators clear actions.

How to prepare

  1. Revise how crop stage, rooting depth, soil texture and weather influence irrigation decisions.
  2. Practise explaining a field uniformity check from measurement through diagnosis and correction.
  3. Review how water quality, salinity, drainage and infiltration affect crop and soil management.
  4. Prepare an example of reducing water waste without placing the crop under avoidable stress.
  5. Think through a power or pump constraint that forces you to prioritise fields.

Common mistakes

  • Giving a fixed irrigation interval without referring to crop, soil or weather conditions.
  • Blaming emitters before checking pressure, filtration, leaks and operating practice.
  • Ignoring drainage and salt movement when discussing water quality.
  • Proposing a technically ideal schedule that operators cannot deliver with available power.
