About the role
This interview assesses how you shape a game's core experience and lead a design team from uncertain ideas to playable, testable systems. The panel wants strong design reasoning, humility in response to player evidence and practical collaboration with engineering, art, narrative and production.
How to prepare
- Choose portfolio projects that show your exact contribution and the design problem each project addressed.
- Prepare a systems example covering goals, rules, feedback loops, balance and unintended player behaviour.
- Review a playtest where observation or data led you to change the design.
- Think through how you give difficult feedback to experienced designers while keeping ownership clear.
- Practise defending the core player experience when schedule or technical limits force scope cuts.
Common mistakes
- Describing a game feature without explaining the player problem it solves.
- Claiming team outcomes without separating your contribution from the work of others.
- Treating personal taste as stronger evidence than playtesting or technical constraints.
- Adding mechanics when a simpler change would strengthen the core loop.
