About the audition
This audition tests your ability to describe a football match accurately as it unfolds while adding context and emotion at the right moments. The panel wants sharp identification, an understanding of the game, disciplined use of research and a commentary partnership that serves listeners rather than competing for airtime.
How to prepare
- Practise identifying players quickly from position, movement and squad information rather than shirt number alone.
- Commentate on muted match footage and review where your words added value or covered useful natural sound.
- Prepare team shapes, likely starters, recent themes and correct name pronunciations for a practice fixture.
- Rehearse several scorelines and match states so your intensity reflects the action and its significance.
- Practise handing to an analyst with a focused question and returning promptly when play restarts.
Common mistakes
- Shouting through every attack so major moments have nowhere to rise.
- Forcing prepared statistics into passages where they distract from the ball.
- Ignoring the co-commentator or failing to reclaim the live action.
- Hiding a mistaken identification instead of correcting it briefly.
