About the role
A microfinance loan officer finds borrowers, assesses small businesses, recommends suitable loans and monitors repayment in the field. The interview tests practical cash flow judgement, observation, organisation and respectful handling of customers whose records may be informal.
How to prepare
- Practise estimating sales, stock costs, household drawings and free cash from a simple trading scenario.
- Review the questions and observations that can verify a small business's normal activity.
- Prepare an example of completing work independently across several locations.
- Think through a firm but respectful conversation about a missed instalment.
Common mistakes
- Treating collateral as proof that the borrower can repay.
- Accepting the applicant's sales estimate without checking it against stock and customer activity.
- Using threats or disclosing a borrower's situation during collection visits.
