About the role
A media planning intern helps research audiences, compare channels, update schedules and check the numbers behind a campaign plan. The interview tests practical reasoning and accuracy more than advanced buying experience. You should be able to explain why a channel fits the objective and how you would verify the data used.
How to prepare
- Revise basic spreadsheet formulas, percentages and checks for totals and duplicate entries.
- Compare how outdoor, radio, television, search, social and online display can serve different campaign objectives.
- Practise matching a defined audience and objective to a small set of justified channels.
- Prepare an example of finding and correcting an error in a table, schedule or group project.
- Review a campaign and note where its intended audience was likely to encounter it.
Common mistakes
- Recommending a channel only because it is popular or personally familiar.
- Confusing a large possible audience with effective reach of the intended audience.
- Ignoring small errors in dates, units, totals or plan versions.
- Quoting data without explaining its source or relevance.
