About the role

This interview tests whether you can move from a public problem to evidence-based advice. The panel wants structured thinking, careful use of sources, concise writing and an understanding that a policy must be practical to deliver as well as attractive on paper.

How to prepare

  1. Choose a current public service problem and practise defining its causes, affected groups and desired outcome.
  2. Review how to compare policy options using benefits, costs, risks and feasibility.
  3. Prepare an example of checking the quality of conflicting evidence.
  4. Practise summarising a longer analysis into a short recommendation with clear caveats.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping to a preferred solution before defining the policy problem.
  • Quoting figures without checking their source, date or limitations.
  • Recommending an option without discussing delivery constraints or trade-offs.
