About this interview
Press conference practice gets you ready to face a room of journalists on behalf of yourself or an organisation. You work on a clear opening statement, handling hostile questions, staying on message without dodging, and saying plainly when you do not have an answer yet.
How to prepare
- Write an opening statement of about two minutes covering what happened, what you are doing and what comes next.
- List the hardest questions journalists will ask and prepare honest, brief responses.
- Agree with your team in advance what you can and cannot share.
- Practise saying you will follow up when you do not know something, then keep that promise.
Common mistakes
- Saying 'no comment', which sounds like hiding something.
- Guessing at facts under pressure that later turn out to be wrong.
- Repeating the wording of a hostile question in your answer, which gives it more weight.
