About the role
This interview is about keeping refinery units safe, stable and economically useful when feed, equipment condition and operating demands change. The panel will assess how you troubleshoot from evidence, respect the operating envelope and define modifications that other disciplines and operators can execute.
How to prepare
- Review mass and energy balances, column behaviour, heat transfer and hydraulic limits.
- Prepare an example where trend data and a field check led to different conclusions.
- Revise process hazard review, relief implications and management of change.
- Choose an optimisation case that involved a trade-off among yield, energy, product quality and reliability.
- Practise explaining a process modification to an experienced console or field operator.
Common mistakes
- Changing several variables at once without preserving a clear diagnostic trail.
- Optimising one unit while ignoring downstream capacity and product specifications.
- Treating a temporary bypass as an operations decision without process safety review.
- Using simulation results without checking instruments, balances and field conditions.
