About the role
This interview assesses how you explain, question and judge current-affairs material during live radio. The panel is looking for disciplined research, impartial framing, firm but fair follow-up questions and calm decisions when guests make contested claims.
How to prepare
- Practise short links that explain why a current issue matters and identify what remains disputed.
- Prepare examples of interviews where close listening led you to challenge an answer or change direction.
- Research an unfamiliar public-interest issue and reduce your verified notes to clear on-air prompts.
- Review how you would handle allegations, offensive language and inaccurate claims during a live contribution.
- Rehearse adjusting your delivery when a producer changes timings through your headphones.
Common mistakes
- Giving listeners names and claims without enough context to understand the issue.
- Reading every question from a script without testing the guest's answer.
- Presenting balance as equal airtime when the available evidence is not equal.
