About the role
This interview covers the engineering layer between raw warehouse data and the metrics used for decisions. The panel is looking for strong SQL and dbt judgement, thoughtful modelling and an ability to make data dependable for analysts and business teams. Senior candidates should also show how they improve shared standards without making delivery needlessly rigid.
How to prepare
- Choose a warehouse model you designed and explain its grain, dependencies and business purpose.
- Revise dbt materialisations, tests, snapshots, incremental models and deployment practices.
- Prepare an example of finding a data quality problem before it affected a decision.
- Practise explaining how you would reconcile two teams' definitions of the same metric.
- Think through the trade-offs between reusable models, query cost and understandable lineage.
Common mistakes
- Describing dbt commands without explaining the modelling decisions behind them.
- Treating a passing build as proof that the underlying business meaning is correct.
- Adding layers of abstraction that make lineage harder for analysts to understand.
