About the role
This interview tests whether you can lead a complex humanitarian portfolio when needs, access and resources change quickly. The panel will look for strategic judgement, disciplined delivery, respect for affected communities and credible leadership across technical teams, partners and donors.
How to prepare
- Map one response you led from assessment and design through delivery, adaptation and close-out.
- Prepare an example of using community feedback or monitoring evidence to change an activity.
- Review how you set decision rights across programme, technical, finance, logistics and security teams.
- Practise explaining a difficult trade-off between speed, quality, coverage and cost.
- Think through how you would manage access loss, partner underperformance and a forecast budget variance.
Common mistakes
- Describing speed as the only measure of a strong emergency response.
- Treating affected people as recipients rather than participants in decisions.
- Giving portfolio figures without explaining your own judgement and actions.
- Ignoring the role of finance, logistics, security and safeguarding in programme quality.
