About the role
A technical product manager owns products that other developers or teams build on, such as APIs, payment rails or internal platforms. At senior level you set the roadmap with engineering leads, weigh technical trade-offs, write clear specs and measure success through adoption and reliability. The panel wants to see that engineers trust your judgement and that you keep the business case in view.
How to prepare
- Prepare a story about a platform or API product you managed, with its users, the key trade-off and the result.
- Be ready to explain a technical concept such as rate limits or versioning in plain language.
- Think about how you measure success for a product whose users are developers.
- Prepare an example of saying no to a feature because of technical debt or reliability risk.
- Revise how you work with engineering leads on estimates, dependencies and sequencing.
Common mistakes
- Trying to out-engineer the engineers instead of focusing on the product decision.
- Ignoring the experience of the developers who use your platform every day.
- Talking about technology without linking it to business outcomes.
