About the award
This interview tests whether university research can move towards a useful product, service or licence with grant support. The panel looks for sound evidence, a genuine market need, responsible handling of intellectual property and a practical path from research to adoption.
How to prepare
- Check the programme's official guidance for current eligibility, intellectual property and spending rules.
- Explain the research in plain language without losing the evidence that supports it.
- Speak with likely users, buyers or delivery partners and record what you learned.
- Map the technical and commercial milestones that the grant would make possible.
- Review ownership and freedom-to-operate questions with the appropriate university or specialist adviser.
Common mistakes
- Describing the science in detail without showing who needs the result.
- Treating a patent or publication as proof that customers will adopt the solution.
- Avoiding unresolved ownership, regulatory or technical risks.
- Using grant money for activities that do not lead to a clear commercial decision.
