About the award
A university-funded PhD studentship interview tests whether you can contribute to a defined research project and grow into an independent researcher. Supervisors usually probe your fit with the topic, command of relevant methods, response to uncertainty and understanding of what the doctorate could add to the field.
How to prepare
- Check the university's official listing for the current project scope, funding conditions, eligibility and dates.
- Read the project description closely and map your prior work to its central questions.
- Review the strengths, limitations and ethical implications of the methods you would use.
- Read recent work relevant to the proposed supervisors' research area without assuming their preferred answer.
- Prepare an honest account of a research setback and what changed in your practice afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Treating the advertised project as fixed when the panel wants to test your judgement.
- Claiming expertise in methods you have not yet used.
- Speaking only about the topic and not about how the research would be carried out.
- Overstating the certainty or reach of the expected findings.
