About the role
An assistant quantity surveyor helps control project cost through measurement, valuations, procurement comparisons, variations and reporting. The interview tests whether you can connect site evidence to commercial records, analyse cost movement and handle disagreements without approving matters beyond your authority.
How to prepare
- Review how measured progress, inspection status and agreed rates support an interim valuation.
- Practise building a like-for-like comparison when quotations contain exclusions or different scopes.
- Revise the records used to track instructions, variations, commitments and forecast cost.
- Prepare an example where you reconciled conflicting quantities or spreadsheet figures.
- Think about what evidence should be captured before completed work is covered.
Common mistakes
- Valuing claimed progress without checking inspection status or site evidence.
- Treating every site change as an approved variation without checking instructions and contract records.
- Reporting a cost increase without separating scope, quantity, rate and timing causes.
- Turning a measurement disagreement into an argument instead of returning to drawings, records and the agreed method.
