About the role
This interview tests whether you can protect project value from early cost planning through final account. The panel is looking for precise measurement, credible forecasting, sound contract judgement and the confidence to challenge unsupported commercial positions.
How to prepare
- Choose a project where your cost advice changed a design or procurement decision.
- Review how you measure work, build rates and check tender returns for omissions or imbalance.
- Prepare an example of controlling variations and reporting their effect on the forecast final cost.
- Practise explaining how you assess interim valuations, loss and expense, and final accounts from contract records.
- Be ready to separate your personal decisions from the work of the wider commercial team.
Common mistakes
- Quoting rates without explaining their source, assumptions or date basis.
- Treating every contractor submission as a negotiation instead of first applying the contract.
- Discussing savings without showing whether scope, quality or risk was transferred.
- Claiming team outputs without making your own checks and decisions clear.
