About the role

An embedded systems engineer writes the firmware that runs on microcontrollers inside connected devices, from meters and trackers to sensors and controllers. The work covers drivers, communication protocols, power budgets, field updates and long sessions with an oscilloscope chasing hardware faults. The panel is deciding whether you debug methodically across hardware and software and design for unreliable power and networks.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare a debugging story from a real board, explaining how you narrowed the fault down between hardware and firmware.
  2. Revise interrupts, timers, memory limits and the common serial protocols you have used.
  3. Be ready to explain how you cut power use on a device and how you measured the result.
  4. Think through how your firmware recovers from brownouts and sudden power cuts without corrupting data.
  5. Practise explaining over-the-air updates and how you would avoid bricking devices already in the field.

Common mistakes

  • Blaming the hardware or the software too early without evidence.
  • Ignoring power and memory limits and describing designs that only work on a powerful dev board.
  • Talking about features without explaining how you tested them on real hardware.
