About the role
A defence intelligence analyst turns incomplete and sometimes conflicting reporting into assessments that support operational decisions. This interview tests source evaluation, collection planning, analytic rigour and the ability to brief uncertainty clearly. The panel also expects sound judgement about sensitive information and professional challenge.
How to prepare
- Practise separating confirmed facts, assumptions and judgements in a short assessment.
- Review methods for checking source reliability, corroborating claims and identifying information gaps.
- Prepare an example of changing your judgement when stronger evidence became available.
- Practise giving a concise verbal brief with a key judgement, confidence level and operational implication.
- Think through how you would record dissent when analysts reach different conclusions.
Common mistakes
- Confusing a plausible explanation with a supported judgement.
- Hiding uncertainty instead of stating confidence and information gaps.
- Giving a long narrative without explaining the decision relevance.
- Revealing classified, confidential or operationally sensitive information.
