About the role
A marine surveyor trainee supports inspections of vessels, cargo or marine equipment and turns observations into reliable records. The panel wants a methodical eye, basic marine knowledge, clear technical writing and the judgement to stop or seek guidance when conditions are unsafe or outside your competence.
How to prepare
- Revise basic vessel layout, structural members, watertight integrity, common machinery spaces and cargo areas.
- Practise describing a defect with its exact location, extent, condition and supporting evidence.
- Review how to plan an inspection from scope and documents through access, safety, checks and reporting.
- Prepare an example of remaining objective when someone disagreed with your finding.
- Check the official maritime authority or classification body for the current rules relevant to the employer's survey work.
Common mistakes
- Writing conclusions without separating observed facts from possible causes.
- Inspecting an unsafe or inaccessible area to appear confident.
- Using vague descriptions that omit the defect's exact location and extent.
